Karnevalové oslavy Puerto Plata začali na konci dvadsiateho storočia, ale svoju najväčšiu popularitu dosiahli v posledných dvoch dekádach. Centrálnou postavou karnevalu je "Taimáscaro". Toto slovo sa skladá z "tai" symbolizujúcu Tainov - prvé etnikum ostrova pri jeho objavení a "máscaro" vyjadrujúce masku na tvári [1]. Tieto fotografie som urobil 17. februára 2013 v meste San Felipe de Puerto Plata v Dominikánskej republike.

Puerto Plata's Carnival celebration started at the end 20th century but it became most popular during last 20 years. The central character of the carnival is called "Taimáscaro". This word consist of the word "Tai", that symbolises "Tainos" - the first ethnic group of the island at the time of its discovery and "máscaro" that refers to a mask at the face [1]. I took these photos on 17the February 2013 in the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata in Dominican Republic.

| Kostýmy "Taimáscaros" sú veľmi farebné a spájajú prvky symbolizujúce tri kultúry na ostrove počas koloniálneho obdobia - španielsku (blúza), indiánsku (plášť s tainskými piktogramami) a africkú (vreckovky a stužky). Nohavice s mušľami reprezentujú Neptúna - boha mora, ktorý chráni Atlantický oceán [1] The "Taimáscaros" costumes are very colourful and they put together items symbolising the three cultures at the island during colonial times - the Spanish (the blouse), the Indian (the coat with Taino pictograms) and African (the handkerchief and ribbons). The pants symbolises Neptune - the god of sea that protects the Atlantic Ocean [1] |
